Amblyopia happens when the brain receives a weaker image from one eye and gradually starts ignoring it. The most common causes are strabismus, a difference in refractive error between the two eyes, or prolonged visual deprivation in one eye due to a drooping eyelid or cataract. Treatment includes corrective glasses, or patching the stronger eye for set hours each day to force the brain to rely on the weaker one, sometimes alongside dilating drops. Earlier treatment means a much better chance of full recovery; neglecting it leads to permanent reduced vision.

Your treatment includes

  • Precisely identifying the cause of amblyopia (strabismus or other)
  • Patching the stronger eye for set hours daily
  • Regular follow-up to track improvement in the weaker eye

Everything you want to know

A condition where vision in one eye (or rarely both) is weaker than normal, not because of a problem in the eye itself, but because the brain has "learned" to ignore the image from that eye during childhood visual development.

Strabismus (the brain ignores the deviated eye's image to avoid double vision), a large difference in refractive error between the eyes, visual obstructions such as congenital cataract or a drooping eyelid covering the pupil, and severe refractive errors in both eyes.

Correcting the underlying cause (glasses or strabismus surgery), and patching the stronger eye to force the brain to use the weaker one.
